Where should we host our small group? Choosing a small group location and coordinating schedules can be a challenge.
Here are a few places to consider for a small group location along with the pros and cons of each.
1. On Campus
Many churches host small groups on a regular schedule, and prefer for them to be on campus.
There are many positives of meeting at the church. It’s usually available, neutral, and people usually know where they’re going.
Yet, there are several downsides as well. Churches are often more formal. This may discourage the free discussion and bonding that make groups so powerful. Many churches also lack small intimate spaces.
Eric Geiger from LifeWay says, “Churches that focus exclusively on groups that meet on the church campus every week typically have 80+ percent of their adult attendance in a group each week.”
2. In Home
Early Christians met for Bible study and worship in believers’ homes. This setting is warm, informal, and comfortable. People who are reluctant to visit a church might be more willing to join in a low pressure setting at a home.
Having a small group at home definitely help to build bonds, but it also has downsides. It often puts pressure on the hosts to clean, prepare refreshments, and otherwise entertain.
3. Coffee Shops and Restaurants
What could be more natural than getting together over a cup of coffee or a meal to engage in Bible study? This setting has obvious benefits–coffee, snacks, and a setting meant for comfortable discussion.
But, some people may not find it as inviting and they might be watching their budgets. Also, there is often limited space and distraction in public places.
4. Workplaces and Schools
Meeting in workplaces and schools can be appealing to people who work or study on site. This connects fellow believers who are peers or coworkers.
But, many employers and schools are reluctant to allow religious activities on site. Also people, who don’t work or go to school there, may be reluctant to attend.
